Special & Offshore
Special Ships & Offshore
Apart from naval vessels there are a number of ships sailing for governmental authorities and similar institutions like research vessels, customs cutters and pilot ships. We categorise these vessels as “Special Ships”. “Offshore” constructions and vessels are crafts specifically designed and built to perform operations at sea such as building, maintaining and provisioning of offshore windparks and oil rigs.
Many Special Ships periodically call at EMDEN DOCKYARD for class renewal, repair and refit works. Among them are some particular vessels built according to the SWATH principle (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) like the research ship Planet and the customs patrol vessels Helgoland and Borkum. By the way, all three vessels were built by EMDEN DOCKYARD’s predecessor Nordseewerke. So it goes without saying that we really know how to deal with ships like these.
Research vessels like the Maria S. Merian often come to the dockyard needing a number of special requirements. Based on our broad experience, we at EMDEN DOCKYARD are used to cope with highly technical requests which are common for research ships.
It was only about ten years ago that the first pioneers dared to move from land-based wind turbines to offshore installations. Since then the offshore wind technology developed rapidly and today hundreds of wind turbines are working in the German Bight. For installation, maintenance and repair a wide range of special vessels and platforms are required. EMDEN DOCKYARD is an established partner for those companies that are dealing with the offshore industry.
Our Offshore Activities
Our tasks comprise of repair works on jack-up barges and offshore supply vessels (OSV) as well as the integration of modifications to the barges and vessels. Furthermore, there is an increasing number of special platforms like crew transfer vessels (CTV) that need to be serviced from time to time. And finally, we seek opportunities to be a service partner to the wind turbine operators, especially within their logistics chain.
